| Commanders Comment:
Happy New Year to everyone and hopefully we will be able to get our new year started with a well-attended meeting on January 27, 2008. In addition to our regular program we will be presenting Sons of Confederate Veterans Resolutions to Mrs. Turner Nelms and Mrs. William Moore. In the presentation by Tom Tokarz at our annual Muster Day Program in October, titled Formation and Deployment of Powhatan Troop, you heard that the Powhatan Troop was formed by Phillip St. George Cocke, of Powhatan, just after John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry. To follow up on that theme, I would like to give a presentation on John Brown’s Raid – Virginia’s Call to Arms, in January, to explain the impact of John Brown’s raid on the military preparation of Virginia and the important role of Phillip St. George Cocke, George W. Randolph, Francis H. Smith and T.J. Jackson. John Brown’s raid had some interesting implications, and the subsequent preparation by Virginia involved a host of historical characters. Membership: A few of our members did not pay their membership dues in the fall of 2007. I am trying to contact all the individuals to reinstate their membership. If you think you have not paid, please call me at 598-7922. Thanks for your cooperation. Past Commander, George T. Lee III To elaborate on what Commander Lee has requested, please remember that the national/state dues do not include your Camp dues of $5.00; therefore, if you have sent your dues to the state, and have not paid your Camp’s dues, please mail your dues to the camp’s PO Box or, better yet, come to your Camp’s meeting and pay. The January meeting will be on the 27th. The meeting will be held at The Village Garden Café, 1 pm lunch, and 2 pm meeting. The Village Garden Café, 8844 Old Buckingham Rd. is just east of the Courthouse. Cost per person is $9.00 (plus you may tip our Hostess). The Year of Davis Throughout this year, I will be including more on the Life of President Jefferson Davis. |

Please, if you have an email address, email me so I can send you your monthly report by email. I can send you a blind copy if you wish. This saves the Camp 51 cents monthly. I have started sending the report as a PDF file, so you should not have any trouble opening it. Software to read the PDF file is available on the net for free, if you do not already have it. To date, I have 15 email addresses. You can email me at scvcamp1382@yahoo.com . Paul M. Houser The Cannon Report Editor |
