Lee III Commander The Cannon Report: The May meeting will be a trip to Pamplin Park on the 28th, at 2 p.m. Commander Lee has arranged for a guided walking tour. The cost will be $12.00 a person. If you wish to car pool/caravan from Powhatan, meet at 1 p.m., in Flat Rock, diagonally across from Sheetz at the parking lot between the closed Central Virginia Bank and the closed grocery store. Otherwise, meet in the parking lot at Pamplin Historical Park at 2 p.m. Parking is free. If you have any questions call Commander Lee at 804.598.7922. The April meeting was a Camp picnic, at the Powhatan Courthouse, on the 30th. Commander Henry Kidd did the honors of administering the oath to two new members. Commander Lee and Adjutant Michael Pogue presented a Camp resolution to Mrs. Malcolm Campbell Sr. honoring her late husband for his hard work and contributions to the Powhatan Troop. Then came the moment we had all been waiting for. The SCV Commander of the Armies of Northern Virginia, Henry Kidd, unveiled his latest work of art, “First Muster.” Bids were taken for the first 100 numbered and signed prints. You still have time to submit a bid. Submit your sealed and dated bid to Powhatan Troop, Camp 1382; P.O. Box 441; Powhatan, VA 23139 by May 28th. You can view a photo of the print on line at www.powhatantroop.org. I have also posted photos of the picnic on line. Remember, the proceeds will go to the scholarship fund. The Camp plans to auction off the first 100 signed and numbered prints to the highest bidders. After the first 100, prints may be purchased for $85 each; they will also be signed and numbered. There will only be 500 printed. Although the Camp selected the subject, Commander Henry Kidd did an excellent job in selecting the presentation. The subject: the first Muster at the Powhatan Courthouse in 1861; the presentation: the ladies of Powhatan presenting the Powhatan Troop flag to Company E, Fourth Virginia Cavalry. The June meeting is planned to tour the Appomattox Court House on the 25th. We will meet at the Powhatan Courthouse at 1:30. It is about a 90-minute drive. This is a National Park and is operate by the National Park Service. It is open from 8:30 till 5:00. There is a $4 admission charge unless you have a National Park pass. Paul M. Houser, Editor The Cannon Report |
