| June 20, 2006 Commander’s Comments The prints of “First Muster,” by Commander Henry Kidd, are ready. If you wish to purchase a print please contact me. Mrs. Ash, the owner of the framing shop, The Complete Picture, will give a 15% discount on any print she frames by Henry Kidd. I have the coupon to take to Mrs. Ash. In order not to conflict with all our vacation plans we will not have a meeting in July or August but will resume our regularly scheduled meetings in September with a camp meeting/picnic. George T. Lee III Commander The Cannon Report: There has been a change in dates for the June meeting. The trip to the Appomattox Court House will be held on July 1st, the first Saturday in July. This is a National Park and is operated by the National Park Service. It is open from 8:30 till 5:00. There is a $4 admission charge unless you have a National Park pass. If you have any questions or wish to carpool, call Commander Lee at 804.598.7922. He plans to leave at 1:30 because the trip is about a 90-minute drive from Powhatan. Please try to be at Appomattox at 3:00 and plan on a long day. Commander Lee has the copies of the “First Muster Day.” Please consider purchasing one of these prints and help support the Camp’s effort to award scholarships to Powhatan seniors. The minimum cost is $85 of which $35 goes to the cost of the print and to Commander Henry Kidd. To my knowledge we have sold approximately 18 prints. I have received my copy and have posted a better copy on line. You can view it on line at www.powhatantroop.org. The first Powhatan Troop scholarship was awarded at the Seniors Award Ceremony at the Powhatan High School. The scholarship was awarded to Rivers Kelly, who will be attending Virginia Tech this fall. The check was awarded by compatriot Dr John Moody and Commander Lee. Unfortunately, there were no entries from Blessed Sacrament Huguenot High School. On behalf of the Camp, I wish to thank Compatriot Moody for all his hard work and dedication on this project. Please note as mentioned in the commanders comments, there will be no meetings in July or August. Our September meeting will be a picnic/business meeting. Details will be in the August Cannon Report. A Note off Special Interest Commemorative license plates can now be pre-purchased in time to celebrate the bicentennial of General Lee’s birth in 2007! |

| You may not be aware that the Virginia Division SCV is working to pre-sell 350 sets of these license plates. As of my email on June 10, they have sold only 40. They have until the end of July to reach the requirement of 350. You may not be aware anyone (non-SCV) can own these plates. Please contact your friends and family members and ask them if they might be interested in obtaining a set of these plates. For more details please visit the Virginia Division SCV website at http://va-scv.org/site/ (just click on the license plate image). Truly General Lee deserves this commemorative for his 200th birthday. Note: the information below was taken from the Virginia Division SCV web site. To pre-purchase, complete the Form VSA 10 (specialized license plate request form) and return the completed signed form with your payment to: Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative P.O. Box 3732 Glen Allen, VA 23058-3732 Your payment should be made payable to “Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative”. Your entire payment will be forwarded to the DMV along with your completed specialized license plate request form when 350 pre-purchase requests have been received. When completing the form, make sure you: 1) Check the license plate category “Special Interest” and write “New Robert E. Lee Plate” in the space provided.2) If you would like special lettering on your plate, check the “Personalized Plates” square and write in your four potential lettering choices in the spaces provided. As the “Robert E. Lee” plate includes the General’s picture (considered a logo), you will only be able to select 6 letters. 3) Ensure all listed owners of the automobile for which you are purchasing the plate are included on the form and have signed the form. Any requests being processed without all the applicable owners’ signatures will be rejected by DMV. 4) Ensure you have checked your insurance coverage option correctly. Again, any requests being processed without an insurance declaration will be rejected by DMV. 5) Do not complete credit card payment information. DMV’s process requires we submit all our pre-purchase requests with one check. The DMV does not have the time to go through our stack of applications and individually run/authorize credit card payment information. 6) Ensure you enclose your check or money order made payable to “Robert E. Lee License Plate Initiative”: a. Your check or money order should be for $10 if you want a set of plates with lettering/numbering assigned by DMV. OR b. Your check or money order should be for $20 if you want a set of plates with specialized lettering for which you’ve completed the “Personalized Plates” section of the form. Please be aware the General Assembly recently changed the law related to development of specialized license plates. Therefore we have until July 31st, 2006 to accumulate 350 pre-purchasers of the Robert E. Lee Plate. If we’re unable to achieve 350 in that time we’ll seek authorization for issuance of the plate again in 2007. If we have to take that extra step we may need to hold your pre-purchase payment up to two years before the plates are finally produced. During the period leading up to issuance of the Lee License Plate if your current license plates or registration come up for renewal you should pay any required renewal fee and go forward with the normal renewal process as you would if you were not purchasing specialized plates. If you have any questions related to the Robert E. Lee license plate initiative please put them in writing and mail them to the P.O. Box address listed above or e-mail christopherjevans@comcast.net.
